Introduction to Housing Discrimination Laws for IL Staff: August 20, 2014

The lack of accessible, affordable housing continues to be one of the primary barriers to independence for people with disabilities all over the country. Locating housing is challenging enough, but consumers frequently run into issues with modifications and accommodations before they move or during their residency. Join us on August 20th to learn more about action you can take with your consumers when they face housing discrimination. Our presenters will provide an overview of relevant pieces of the Fair Housing Act, ADA, and 504, as well as walking you through what to expect and how to handle when working through housing discrimination problems with your consumers. Learning Objectives Upon completion of this webinar, participants will have knowledge and resources that will enable them to: • Describe the history of the Fair Housing Act and the intersection with the ADA and Section 504 • Describe the general prohibitions against discrimination based on disability and other protected classes in the Fair Housing Act • Identify general design and construction requirements of the Fair Housing Act and concepts of reasonable accommodations and reasonable modifications and their relationship to accessibility • Identify strategies, best practices, and examples of successful cases with consumers experiencing housing discrimination
